HORTON PLAINS
Horton Plains is located in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. This region was designated a National Park in 1988. Three major Sri Lankan rivers start from the Horton Plains. They are the Mahaweli, Kelani and Walawe.
The original name of the Horton Plains was Maha Eliya Thenna (Great Open Plain). But in the British period, the plains were renamed after
Sir. Robert Wilmot Horton, the British Governor of Ceylon from 1831 to 1837. The famous Baker’s Falls in Horton Plains which is 66feet high, were named after Sir Samuel Baker, who was a famous explorer.
Horton Plains is full of fern and flora. There are 20 types of flowers found among a Dwarf Bamboo found only in Horton Plains. The famous ‘World’s End’ is also found here.
