Elephant Walk Experience Program

(3-4 hour experience)

This experience is the most up close and personal and ethical way to see domestic elephants in Sri Lanka. It is an alternative to riding option. Allowing the elephant’s maximum freedom whilst in captivity, and giving them the opportunity to act as they would in the wild. Something they do not get when tourists are on their back, due to safety and control.

What’s included:

  • Personalised educated guide for your whole tour.
  • Educational talk by an expert about our Foundation, elephants and a tour of our museum
  • Approx. 40 minutes walking with an elephant around our grounds watching and observing the elephant whilst learning about Sri Lankan elephants
  • Bathing the same elephant in the river, with only your group without other tourists
  • Optional shower whilst standing next to elephant
  • Free entrance and tour of Maximus Elephant Dung Paper Factory
  • Optional 3 course lunch – including tea or coffee
  • Exclusivity for groups bigger that 5 people.

Guests can sit and watch elephants free roaming and interacting with each other. This is included in the pricing and there is no time limit on this. Guests can add on garden tour to either package, led by our experienced gardener who will show you our beautiful grounds and inform you about all the native plants and trees that can be used for food, health and medicinal purposes. A truly enjoyable and educational tour where guests with learn about the nature in Sri Lanka.


Volunteer Program

(1 day / 1 day 1 night package)

What’s Included:

  • Accommodation onsite (for over night stays)3 meals a day cooked by our trained onsite chef (09:00am Breakfast 13:00 Lunch and 18:00 Evening Meal)
  • MEF Volunteer T-Shirt
  • Tour of our onsite elephant dung paper factory and 15% discount on purchases
  • Towels, Linen and Mosquito nets (for overnight stays)
  • Kettle, Fridge Freezer, Water Filter, Clothes Washing Bowls (Hand Wash)
  • Social activities arranged (for over night stays) including movies, bonfires, quiz nights

Volunteer Program

These experiences are ideal for anyone on a tight schedule but really want to be hands on involved in volunteer work that can really have an impact on improving the welfare of these beautiful animals. Not only will they be taking care of the elephants but they will also learn about the plight of domestic elephants in Sri Lanka and how Millennium Elephant foundation are supporting them.

Arrival 07:00am- Morning Yoga

07.30-08.30 Induction and orientation

09.00 Breakfast

10.00 Preparing and feeding elephant vitamins and medications and feet brushing and checking

11.00 Cleaning elephant Night beds

12.00 Elephant Bathing & one on one photograph opportunity with elephants

12.30-14.00 Lunch break, lunch served at 13.00

14.00 Paper factory tour

15.00-17.00 Project work(can include eco gardening, DIY, Painting, Improvements to foundation, Recycling)

17.00-18.00 Time for showers and to get changed etc

18.00 Dinner served and certificates and volunteer t-shirts given

The Voluntourist package

A unique packages for those clients pushed for time, that want a hands on experience to help out and give back to the elephants, then to support responsible tourism and participate in the Elephant Walk Experience, which is lovely way to reward their hard work ,really learn about the foundation and what we are trying to achieve by first experiencing the alternative to riding option

The package includes :

  • 2 over night stays
  • 5 meals
  • The volunteer day program
  • The elephant walk experience
  • Volunteer t-shirt
  • Volunteer certificate

Itinerary;

  • Arirve on Sunday-Wednesday evening around 4/5pm
  • Induction and orientation. Dinner 6pm, over night stay and social activities (bonfire,quiz,pub,movie)
  • Day 1 Do full day volunteer day program 7-5 (breaks 9-10 and 12-2) for meals and rest,
  • Evening meal served at 6pm, followed by social activities- (bonfire, quiz, movie night) and over night stay
  • Day 2 Breakfast and Elephant walk experience and depart

The activities included in the volunteer day program are as follows:

Yoga Preparing Elephant vitamins and medicines Feeding Elephant vitamins and medicines Checking Elephant feet for foot rot Elephant bathing Breakfast Cleaning beds and enclosures Recycling or beach and river clean Lunch Paper factory tour Project work (research, fruit shop help, eco gardening, painting, diy, behaviour studies) Dinner Receive certificate and volunteer tshirt

The activities for the Elephant walk experience include:

  • Museum Tour
  • Elephant Walk (approx. 40 minutes)

  • Elephant Feeding

The day finishes at 5pm, you will have dinner at 6pm, Stay over night again, the the next day do The Elephant Walk Experience (minus paper factory as you will have done day before) have breakfast and depart.
